What the jigsaw is for
- Cutting intricate curves or irregular cuts
- Cutting holes in the middle of material
- A portable, beginner-friendly power saw for many small jobs
Limitations
- Material thickness is limited by blade size
- Long straight cuts are slower and less clean than a circular saw/table saw
- Blade flex means itβs hard to achieve perfectly square cuts; use a circular saw (table/plunge/mitre) when square, clean edges matter
- Even with fine blades, jigsaws can cause splintering/tear-out
Anatomy (key parts)
- Trigger
- Blade and blade clamp
- Base plate / shoe (may be adjustable for bevel cuts)
- Power cord / battery
Before you start
- Choose the correct blade for the material
- Mark your cut clearly and plan how the offcut will fall away safely
Setup
- Check the blade is secure and appropriate
- Secure the workpiece so the cut line overhangs the bench (clearance underneath)
