Cahoots currently has three types: circular, triangular, and rectangular orbital sanders.
</aside>
What orbital sanders are for
- Removing surface material from wood, paint, and some plastics
- Smoothing surfaces and removing splinters
- Removing bumps, ridges, drips, and raised grain
- Roughening surfaces for better glue/paint/finish adhesion
Limitations
- Removes material quickly — can gouge if left in one place
- Can round edges/corners unintentionally
- Can create uneven/wavy surfaces if held in one spot
- Can leave visible sanding marks (less than belt sanders)
- Unsuitable for small or thin pieces
- Can grab/dig in when first contacting the surface (avoid by placing the running sander flat while moving laterally)
- Can burn/melt some materials (speed control may help where available)
Anatomy (key parts)
- On/off switch
- Speed adjustment dial (some machines)
- Sandpaper
- Velcro pad + hole pattern (circular/triangular)
- Sandpaper clamps + rubber pad (rectangular)
